The Secret Of Happiness Is Being Grateful

Let me share with you the secret of happiness. In fact it is no iron-clad secret at all, so to speak.

We all know there are various reasons which affect one's happiness. From having a sense of purpose in life; not worrying about keeping up with the Jones, engaging in altruistic activities and forgiveness.

But one of the most important elements of a happy life is the ability to be thankful for the good. This so-called secret of happiness is simple yet powerful. Being grateful. The key to happiness is to appreciate what you have. Or count your blessings. Yes, you can be happy by just being grateful.

Remember happiness is a just state of mind. True happiness is not based on what you achieve and acquire. I'm sure many a times, you have read or seen successful or wealthy folks who are still not happy.

Initially, they are excited and on cloud nine. But after some time, the excitement starts to dwindle and fear and anxiety have taken over their daily life. Worrying about losing all they have acquired. They start to have fear for their safety because of their material wealth. They may even start losing trust anyone who came near them. Sad, but true.

As I have just mentioned, happiness is a state of the mind. You can have everything in the world and still feel miserable. Then, there are people who have relatively little, yet they are full of joy.

The secret of happiness is learn to to appreciate and be grateful for what you already have. If you are born healthy and physically normal, just imagine how would you feel if suddenly you go blind or having some other physical disabilities? I know it is scary, even to think about it.

Those who have gone through life's trials and tribulations, know the importance and power behind expressing heartfelt gratitude for the many blessings in life that are often times overlooked and taken for granted.

When you feel grateful for whatever you have now, you unlock powerful feelings of happiness and contentment that will empower you and enhances quality of life.

Let me share with you this simple but profound quote by Etty Hillesum, a Dutch Jewish writer known for her diaries and correspondence from Westerbork concentration camp.

"As life becomes harder and more threatening, it also

becomes richer, because the fewer expectations we have,

the more good things of life become unexpected gifts

that we accept with gratitude."

  1. You are you own sanctuary - happiness lies within you and within you only. If you are dependent on outside people or sources to make you happy, or material possessions to make you happy, you will never be happy. Outside sources are simply a by-product of your happiness. You need nothing from the outside to make you happy.
